A TOWN centre jeweller’s shop has been burgled by a gang of men on quad bikes.

Beaverbrooks, on Cheapside, was broken into at 12.20am today by four men who, according to police, left the scene on quad bikes.

Police confirmed jewellery had been stolen in the raid.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Enquiries are ongoing following a reported burglary at a shop in Barnsley Town Centre.

“At around 12.20am this morning it is reported that four males have broken through the metal shutters of a jewellery shop in Cheapside and smashed the front window.

“A quantity of jewellery was taken during the incident.

“The four males are believed to have left the scene on quad bikes heading in the direction of Stairfoot.

“An investigation is underway and anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 10 of the 5 April 2019 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

A spokesperson for Beaverbrooks said: “We can confirm that there was an incident at our Barnsley store in the early hours of this morning and the store is now closed.

“We are working closely with the police to aid their investigation and look to reopen as soon as possible.”

The shop remains closed while investigations take place.
