A HUNDRED years after the Somme, a local genealogist is tracking down the war dead from Hoyland so a special service can be conducted for each one.

Graham Noble is an ex-town planner, so researching with a keen attention to detail comes with the territory.

His place of worship, Elsecar Holy Trinity Church, has a memorial of war dead from the local area and Graham is working to identify each name so a commemorative service can be conducted on the centenary of each of their deaths throughout 2016.

Graham, 59, of Wood View, Elsecar said: “In 1916 the pace of the war increased. With the campaign in the Somme hoping to break the stalemate, the deaths came in thick and fast.”

The short services are open to everyone and if you would like further details, get in touch with Graham on 492157.
