A FRESH alert has been sounded about a drugs problem in Penistone.

Worried resident Jeff Hill has repeated his warning that ‘a wave is coming’ and fears the issue is not being taken seriously.

He says graffiti is in place telling people where to buy drugs.

He told a Police and Community Together meeting he will not give up and said: “The first dead child and I will bring this back to the committee.”

But police insist the matter is not being brushed under the carpet and say they are working with staff at Penistone Grammar School where there have been reports of drug activity.

Mr Hill raised the issue at last month’s PACT meeting to be told by beat bobby PC Mark Winter: “There isn’t a junior aspirin here compared to some places.”

At the July PACT meeting, Mr Hill said: “It’s not an aspirin. We do have a problem with drugs and I will keep pushing until I get some kind of result.

“I have talked to Penistone Grammar School staff and it seems there is a substantial drugs problem,” he said. “The Trans Pennine Trail has five areas where drugs can be dealt. I just want to see a Penistone child’s life saved.”

He said that near the old David Brown factory site, there is graffiti saying: Get Your Drugs Here.

“The wave is coming and it’s not funny,” said Mr Hill.

Community safety team leader Mark Miller said: “No-one said it was funny. All we are saying is that any concerns are nothing compared what is going on elsewhere.

“That is not to say we don’t have to do anything about it. We are working with the grammar school. Staff are already engaged and we have dealt with several incidents. Things are happening.

“We are well aware of the problems and will continue to be so and build a picture, also talking to young people who have information.

“It is not being brushed under the carpet.”
