Daniel Stendel admits he does not know how to fit his three star central midfielders into a starting line-up but says it is a ‘good situation.’

Kenny Dougall and Alex Mowatt played for the first three months of the season but a two-month injury lay-off for Dougall allowed Cameron McGeehan a run of games and he has excelled during the current six-game unbeaten run. Dougall has been a substitute for the last two matches.

Stendel said: “At the moment it is a difficult decision because Kenny is back but Cam and Alex are playing so well. Most of the time we only play two in the middle but we have three very good players in that position. It is a good situation for me and the competition is open in training.”

Mowatt has played all 26 League One matches this season, making him the joint top appearance-maker with centre-back Ethan Pinnock. Dougall has started 14 and McGeehan 15, with seven substitute appearances.

The other central midfielders are 21-year-old Jared Bird, who could be loaned out in this window, as well as Callum Styles, 18, who is being assessed as the Reds decide whether to send him back out on loan after he spent the first half of the season at his first club Bury in League Two.
