PLANS have been unveiled to merge a Barnsley GP surgery that struggled to recruit new doctors with another practice.
Proposals to merge Rotherham Road Medical Surgery at Athersley with the Hill Brow Practice at Staincross will ‘safeguard the future’ of both practices, according to bosses at Hill Brow.
The move follows Rotherham Road Medical Centre asking the Staincross practice last April to help out because it was struggling to recruit new GPs.
Since then a number of doctors from Hill Brow have been working at both surgeries and it is now proposing to merge to become one large practice managed by Hill Brow.
Staff at Rotherham Road Medical Centre, whose website says it has two GPs, said they have been told not to comment but Julia Gledhill, practice manager at Hill Brow, spoke to the Chronicle.
She said that the proposals are in the early stages and it will be up to Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group to make the final decision on the merger.
