FRIENDS of Hoyland Lowe are hoping to start renovations to the 18th century folly after they were given the deeds to the landmark.

The voluntary group applied for the documents last year to make an initial assessment of the site and were delighted to get them through last week.

Treasurer Andy Turner, 44, said he hoped they could begin fund-raising for renovation work soon.

He said: "It took some getting the deeds out of the council. I think they were embarrassed as they say they were meant to keep them maintained and they obviously haven't.

"I think it's all looking positive now though. It would be a shame to let it tumble down but it all depends on the funding we get."

The documents show the Lowe stand was handed over to the council by the water board in 1991 on condition the site was maintained.

But the building, off Hawshaw Lane, Upper Hoyland, needs substantial repairs if it is to be restored.

Now the group must wait for an architect to make an estimate of the repair costs before members can start applying for grants.
