THE parents of murdered MP Jo Cox were the guests of honour at an event held to try and tackle lonliness and social isolation in Barnsley.

Gordon and Jean Leadbeater attended the Superjam Tea Party. They and the rest of their family support events which bring people together in communities. The ‘Great Get Together’ movement was started in Jo’s memory, inspired by her first speech to Parliament in which she had said ‘we have more in common than that which divides us’.

Tuesday’s event at the Holiday Inn, Dodworth, marked the fourth anniversary of the monthly event which regularly attracts hundreds of people.

“It was undoubtedly a Great Get Together with more than 100 guests,” said organiser Kathy Markwick. “Gordon made a very moving speech about Jo and the Mission on Loneliness which was launched following her death.”

The events are open to people of all ages, but particularly aimed at elderly people who may be lonely or socially isolated.

The next Superjam event will be on Tuesday September 18 when special guest will be Barry Eldred, the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire. For tickets contact Kathy on 0114 246 9666.
