HALLOWE'EN may have passed but people might be forgiven for thinking they've seen the Ghostbusters at Barnsley Town Hall – men with orange backpacks and vacuum-like devices.

But it's not ghosts they are busting – it's gum.

Part of Barnsley Council's Neighbourhood Pride team schedule, gum-busting takes place once a month in the pavement area around the town hall.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman, said:"There is a lot of redevelopment taking place in the town centre as part of our Better Barnsley plans, but it is still important to keep the area clean, tidy and welcoming for residents, businesses and visitors.

"It costs around £1.6m to collect litter and clean gum and cigarette ends from streets across the borough so I urge people to be responsible and dispose of litter correctly."
