FIVE firearms have been surrendered to police in Barnsley as part of a three-week gun amnesty.
South Yorkshire Police launched the three-week surrender as a way for people to dispose of any firearm, or knife, safely and quickly without fear of being prosecuted for possession.
More than 50 weapons are now in the hands of the police. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Whittaker, who led the amnesty, said: “More often than not firearms can be passed down through generations as family heirlooms, leaving today’s owner without a licence and illegally in possession of an unwanted firearm.”
