Adam Hammill's future remains uncertain with Barnsley unlikely to release their official retained list this week.

The Reds are understood to be willing to discuss options with the winger but are yet to offer him a contract while he has also been linked with a move to Australia having previously spoken about having offers to play abroad.

Chief executive Gauthier Ganaye confirmed to the Chronicle two weeks ago that centre-back Matt Mills and goalkeeper Nick Townsend would not have their contracts renewed by the club when they expire this summer.

The only two other first team players who are out of contract are captain Andy Yiadom, who Barnsley are likely to offer a new deal, and long-serving fan favourite Hammill.

After the 4-1 loss at Derby County which sent Barnsley down from the Championship on Sunday, Hammill stayed longer than any of his team-mates on the Pride Park pitch. He was clearly upset as he applauded the away end for several minutes while thousands of Reds fans sang his name.

The 30-year-old later wrote on Instagram: "Absolutely gutted with today's events. I know this club, my club, will bounce back stronger! Thank you all for today's and the season's support, we all appreciate it. I don't know what the future holds but I do know Barnsley FC has stolen my heart."

The Derby match was Hammill's 100th league game since returning to the club in November 2015. In total, he has made 198 appearances for the club he joined on loan in 2009 then signed permanently and, after leaving in 2011, he came back more than four years later. He scored in both Wembley finals as Barnsley won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and League One play-offs in 2016.

Meanwhile, Barnsley are expected to offer a new contract to Yiadom, who has turned down several offers throughout the season. The 26-year-old right-back almost moved to the Premier League twice last August but failed a medical at Huddersfield Town then a deadline day loan move to Swansea City did not go through in time.

The Ghana international is likely to have plenty of offers with his former boss Paul Heckingbottom understood to be interested in taking him to Leeds United as well as Barnsley loan star Oliver McBurnie.

The Reds would also like to extend the deal of 20-year-old goalkeeper Jack Walton who played the final three matches of the season. He is contracted for another year but is in negotiations over a new deal.

One goalkeeper who will be leaving is Townsend, 23, who is one of the longest-serving players at Oakwell after joining from Birmingham City in 2015 but playing just 18 matches in three seasons at the club. He ended a two-year spell on the sidelines in February then played eight first team games before breaking a finger in a training ground 'fight' with club-mate Dimitri Cavare in March which ended his season.

Mills, 31, has played just four matches in an injury-plagued spell since signing a six-month contract in January following his release by Nottingham Forest.

Also expected to be released is striker Shaun Tuton, 26, who signed from Halifax Town in January 2016 but never started a game. The last of his seven substitute appearances was more than two years ago and he has been loaned back to Halifax this year, failing to score in seven National League appearances.
