THE man who has run a Cudworth boxing club for more than 30 years has praised volunteers’ work for giving the run-down facility a new lease of life.

Fred Gummerson, of the Hard and Fast Boxing Club, has been bowled over by youngsters’ work on a two-week programme run by The Prince’s Trust which saw unemployed 16 to 25-year-olds improve the building, off Barnsley Road.

The programme, which was delivered by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and South Yorkshire Police, was the first scheme of its kind to be jointly run by the police and fire services anywhere in the UK and Fred, 84, couldn’t be happier.

“They deserve so much credit for what they’ve done because everything looks a whole lot better. They have revamped it on the outside, inside and we can’t thank them enough.

“It’s like a different gym now and it’s all thanks to them.”
