A SECURITY worker was violently attacked with a hammer in broad daylight in a failed lunchtime robbery.

A G4S security service worker was approached by a man with a hammer at 1.30pm on Monday after collecting cash from the Tesco Express store on Huddersfield Road.

The man is said to have assaulted the victim with a hammer before taking off in a White Ford Fiesta - without any money.

Chris Taylor, G4S area risk consultant, said: “One of our cash crews suffered minor injuries when they were violently attacked while on a routine service on Huddersfield Road, Barnsley. We urge anyone with information to contact the police.”

Detectives are investigating the attempted robbery which has caused injury to the worker’s arm.

The Tesco store was cordoned off by two police vehicles and closed until 5pm while the police carried out investigations.
