HARD-WORKING students at Penistone Grammar School enjoyed all the fun of the fair as part of a new rewards scheme.

Pupils who accumulated the required number of reward points during the last half-term were treated to social time with their friends and activities including a rodeo bull, bungy run and a coconut shy.

About 1,100 of the school's 1,200 students participated, with each year group given an hour out of lessons to make the most of the fair.

School business manager Carole Mason helped develop the new scheme, which was adopted at the start of the academic year.

"The pupils didn't buy into the previous rewards system because they weren't bothered about a pen or a certificate at the end of the year," she said.

"I think what they want is something tangible that they can engage in and enjoy and share with their peers and that's what's good about this system."

Under the new system, pupils need to collect a certain number of reward points to participate in reward events, with points awarded for merits and commendations and deducted if students receive any sanctions.

Children who do not collect the required number of points cannot attend reward events and must spend time reflecting on their behaviour.
