HARRY Mellor took matters into his own hands to make sure elderly people in Wombwell could enjoy the fruits of his school’s harvest festival.

Key stage two pupil Harry, from High View Primary Learning Centre, wrote a letter to Tesco Hoyland community champion Michelle Gill appealing for her help in donating food towards his school’s collection.

Michelle said: “Harry sent me a lovely letter asking for donations of fruit vegetables and flour. He told me he wanted to give something to the elderly residents that live near his school. He wanted them to know that even though the children were sometimes noisy they could be thoughtful and helpful too.

“I thought it was a lovely heartwarming letter and was really happy to help. We made up 10 bags of fruit, vegetables and flour for Harry to deliver.”

Harry’s donation went to the Newsome Vale housing complex, which neighbours High View on Newsome Avenue.

High View’s Rachel Levitt said: “Tesco made a substantial contribution which Harry and his family brought into school.

“School then decided to donate this to the residents of Newsome Vale. Harry did work hard with the support of his mum and dad.”
