People in Barnsley are being given the chance to say if firefighters should scrap response time targets in emergencies.

It comes after the fire service revealed it has never met its target of reaching 80 per cent of life-threatening incidents within six minutes since it was introduced in 2006.

The consultation in Barnsley will be held on Wednesday from 9am-2pm, followed by a public meeting from 6-8.30pm at The Core on County Way.

One of the options is to have no response time, 'simply a commitment to attending every life-threatening incident as quickly and as safely as possible'.

Other options include revising the target, likely to be within the 9-11 minute range or to have a risk-based target which would involve 'allocating a shorter target time in areas with a higher fire risk, and a longer target time in areas of lower'.

Chief Fire Officer Jamie Courtney said: “Through these public meetings we hope to have open and honest discussions with the people about what they expect from us in terms of a response time and what we can realistically deliver.

“We want to be clear that, whatever the target, we will always attend every life-threatening incident as quickly and as safely as we can.”
