A BARNSLEY primary school has appointed a new 'head of school' who is thought to be Barnsley's youngest headteacher.

Sara Barnett, 29, grew up in Athersley and has just been promoted from deputy head to head of school at Athersley's Laithes Primary - formerly Richard Newman Primary. "I grew up in this community so it feels really nice to be back here, giving something back," she said.

Sara said she never even considered the prospect of rising to the level of headteacher when she started her teaching career seven years ago - let alone achieving it before she turned 30. "I just wanted to make a difference to the lives of children," she said. "I set out just to make as big an impact as I could possibly make.

"Hopefully it goes to show there is no age limit to achieving your dreams - upper or lower." Sara doesn't fit many stereotypes of a headteacher - three years ago she took up kickboxing and tomorrow she will be representing England in the world championships at Stuttgart.
