HEALTH bosses were given a grilling by councillors over radical proposals to overhaul health services in Barnsley to save £90m from the local NHS budget in future years.

Staff from the NHS and Barnsley Hospital came under fire on Tuesday from councillors who are sceptical of a plan published by NHS commissioners which will lead to major changes in health and social care services in the borough.

The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Sustainability and Transformation Plan, (STP) warns that over the next four years there will be a financial shortfall of £571m in the region.

For Barnsley this means about £90m needs to be saved, as demand for services will likely outstrip funding available. A ‘Barnsley Place Based Plan’ sets out ‘the vision of how these changes would be made.
