A Hoyland man who was one of the area's longest-surviving heart transplant patients - and raised thousands for Children in Need - has died.

Father and grandfather Roy Abson died in Mount Vernon Hospital in Barnsley on Sunday after a long and hard-fought battle against cancer. He was 78.

He had his transplant operation almost 19 years ago and then took up line-dancing - using it as a vehicle to raise money for Children in Need.

His sister-in-law Angela Pogson said Roy had been very well known and liked in Hoyland. She said: "The heart transplant, which Roy had at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, saved his life. He was one of the Sheffield area's longest-surviving heart transplant patients."

Roy, of Watson Street, Hoyland, leaves his widow Barbara, son Mark, daughter Natalie and grandchildren Naomi and Donatia.

The funeral service is to be held at Grenoside Crematorium in Sheffield at 3.15pm on Tuesday. The service will be followed by a reception at Hoyland Common working men's club and all who want to pay their respects are welcome.
