KIDS’ swings have been stolen at a popular play area in Royston.

Thieves struck at the park, on East End Crescent, where it’s thought they used bolt cutters to hack off the four metal swings and a picnic table’s steel top.

Coun Jenny Platts, cabinet spokesman for communities, said: “It’s sad and frustrating that someone would choose to steal these items that are enjoyed by children in the area. The value of the items in terms of scrap metal is minimal and it makes no sense that someone would be required to use heavy duty equipment and also transport these items.

“We will be removing the picnic table on safety grounds and the swings will now need to be replaced at a cost to the council, which we expect to complete in April.”
