Heavy snow and ice has caused major disruption across Barnsley.

Roads and pavements were akin to an ice rink, though some have since cleared after neighbours rallied round with shovels and sunny spells saw the ice thaw.

Motorists in Higham had to take extra care after a five foot snow drift obstructed parts of Higham Common Road.

And disabled pensioner Mary Marshall described two strangers who cleared her path of snow as 'angels'.

Mary, aged 79, has a bad heart and back and wears a calliper on her leg.

She was struggling to clear the path at her home in Aldham House Lane, Wombwell, on Saturday afternoon, when her good Samaritans appeared.

She said: "They arrived like angels from heaven and then when they were done they just flew away again- words cannot describe how grateful I am to them."

The two ladies were driving in a car when they saw Mary's plight and decided to stop and help.

As one took the shovel from her the other asked if she had a brush.

The dynamic duo then cleared all her path and then insisted they accompanied Mary inside so they could make sure she was safely and warmly tucked up inside her home.

"They wouldn't tell me their names, but I tell you they were angels and I am so very very grateful," she said.

But the spring snow fall wasn't bad news for everyone.

Three-year-old Dylan Jarvis, of Wombwell, had a whale of a time building a dragon in his back garden.
