Paul Heckingbottom has expressed his desire to bring in an experienced player during the January window.

A move for an experienced player goes against the grain of the club's usual policy but exceptions have been made in the past with the permanent signing of Adam Hammill and Matty James, who signed on a loan deal from Leicester last season.

Asked whether Heckingbottom would consider making an experienced signing of the ilk of James, who added steel and know-how to the midfield when he joined last January, he said: "I would love to do it.

"Whichever position that was available I would love to.

"We know where we have to strengthen and age is irrelevant. It's the best player we can get.

"I would rather work with our own players but if they are not available then we need to use loans.

"It should happen on the first (of January) and be done but we are not in that position so I can't realistically see that happening."
