Ex-Red David Watson has not given up hope of a second spell as part of the England coaching set-up.

The Royston man spent four years as Roy Hodgson's goalkeeping coach but left with the rest of the staff after the embarrassing loss to Iceland in last summer's European Championship. He is still the goalkeeper coach at Premier League Southampton.

Speaking to the Chronicle for our special supplement on Barnsley's promotion to the Premiership 20 years ago, Watson said: "There was an enormous amount of pride representing my country for four years. But there was an immense disappointment that we never did ourselves justice in tournaments.

"I feel I have unfinished business as an England coach and hopefully I will do it again one day. I really enjoyed the experience overall and it made me a better coach and a better person."

Watson has a long-term friendship with current Barnsley head coach Paul Heckingbottom, who is close friends with his brother Robert. Watson said: "Paul was always a really nice kid who loved football. He has done a fantastic job with Barnsley to win the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, get promoted and keep them very very comfortable in the Championship.

"And that is despite selling three or four key players. He will want to pull a new squad together and push on. He has taken the club so far in just 18 months."
