Elsecar Heritage Railway is hoping to open up an old drift mine in time for its Yorkshire Day walk this week.

The old mine was bricked up quite a while ago, according to the heritage railway chairman Del tilling, but he hopes to get it reopened in time for the event on Thursday.

He said: “We’ve written to the council asking for funding but we’re still waiting for a response from them.”

Del is hoping that if it can be reopened, it can eventually be part of the journey along the coalfields memorial line, which is what the line will be known as when it is completed.

“It’s dead exciting, we’re going to cut down all the nettles and clear a path tomorrow.

“Ideally, in future, we’d like people to get the train along to Cortonwood before walking back on the Trans-Pennine Trail.

“We’re going to include the mine in the itinerary for the walk on Thursday if we can.”
