The high sheriff of South Yorkshire visited Penistone as a guest of Penistone Town Council.

Julie Kenny was invited to a town council meeting last week to mark the end of her ceremonial year, which finishes next week, by Penistone Town Councillor Brenda Hinchliff.

She gave a brief speech about her role to councillors and said she hopes to return to the town in the future to visit Penistone Paramount, which has been recommended to her.

"It's a real privilege to be here," she said. "I've never been to a town council meeting before and it's really pleasing to meet you.

"It's been a fantastic year and I've had 300 engagements in nine months."

High sheriffs are the Queen's personal representatives, responsible for law and order in the region they represent.

They also receive royal visitors, and used to be responsible for collecting taxes.

The current role is voluntary and sheriffs are required to pay for their own uniforms and dinners they host.

Town Coun Hinchliff was delighted the high sheriff was able to visit Penistone.

"She was very approachable and I really liked the way she was interested in the community," she said.
