A HISTORIC Grimethorpe building could become a residence for homeless veterans, the Chronicle can reveal.

Grimethorpe Hall, which dates back to 1670, has been derelict for decades but work is being done by Barnsley Council and Historic England in preparation for essential repair works and a steering group, Grimethorpe Hall Community Interest Company, has been set up to oversee the potential plan.

John Hardman, chairman of the group, said: “Our concern with Grimethorpe Hall goes beyond being interested in the building’s fascinating history and saving its exterior. In this current economic climate it’s important that buildings like it can be restored for the community. They have to serve a useful purpose that will be valued.”
