HUNDREDS of homes could be built on an historic Royston site which produced coke for more than a century, the Chronicle can reveal.

Hargreaves Services, the owners of Monckton Coke Works, will set out their masterplan at two public consultation events and locals will get to have their say on its proposals for up to 450 properties on the Lund Hill Lane site.

The first event, at Royston Library, will start on Tuesday between at 3pm while the second, at Havercroft and Ryhill Community Learning Centre, takes place at the same time on the following Tuesday.

A spokesman from the Durham-based company confirmed that it is looking at ways to develop the site and that housing is a serious option.
