Hoyland's new Tesco store - which has been dogged by delays - is now on track to open before Christmas 2014.

Diggers moved in to the Market Street site on November 4 and initial work has started to lay foundations for what is described as a 'timber framed eco-store'.

The supermarket, which is being developed for Tesco by Litton Properties, will bring 140 jobs.

Several amendments were made to the plans after consultation with residents and businesses. These included a roundabout to improve traffic flow at the junction of Market Street and Wombwell Road and a safety barrier at the site entrance 'to prevent anti-social behaviour'. These will form part of the finished store.

Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher said: "It's great to see work begin on the store. It's clear from recent employment statistics that the 140 jobs it will create are much needed in the area.

"Tesco and Litton's commitment to Hoyland is good news and I'm looking forward to seeing the store open and local residents working there."

Tesco spokesman Mark Thomas said: "We're really pleased that construction has now started. It will regenerate a run-down site and bring a much improved shopping choice and experience for the Hoyland community."
