Police were called to a herd of what neighbours described as 'gypsy' horses on the loose in Worsbrough.

Residents of Lewden Farm Lane were woken by the sound of hooves and neighing at 5am on Monday.

Neighbours are used to the two black carriage horses that live opposite their houses in a paddock but the brown and white impostors were running about outside the paddock area.

Resident Janet Stevens said: "I could hear clip clops this morning and neighing - I knew it wasn't the black horses as they are always in the field. Then I heard cars screeching, so the horses must have already been on the road.

"I would have hated for them to be involved in an accident."

Nine horses in total were reported to be roaming around, and wandering into gardens were they were munching on prize flowers and pulling off tree branches.

Residents and police tried to form a barricade to keep the animals away from Station Road where it was feared they would cause an accident

They also looked at trying to get the horses into the paddock as a temporary measure.

Yesterday afternoon, Mrs Stevens rang the Chronicle to say two men had arrived and led the horses away on ropes.
