SOME operations had to be cancelled at Barnsley Hospital amid this week’s severe weather.

The hospital’s chief executive Dr Richard Jenkins said he was pleased to have maintained services, though some outpatient and elective surgeries had been cancelled.

He said the cancellations had been kept to a minimum and appointments would be rearranged as soon as possible.

He thanked staff for travelling to work despite the treacherous conditions, particularly those who had left their car at home and walked to work.

He said: “This really highlights the enormous commitment our staff have to making sure we care for our patients regardless of the challenge.

“Our emergency department and related teams continue to provide an excellent service for those with immediate care needs.

“As we expect the weather conditions to continue over the next few days, we ask patients and visitors to plan ahead in organising travel to the hospital.”
