MORE than 1,600 vulnerable people were admitted to hospital as a result of sustaining a fall in their home in 2018/19, latest figures have revealed.

The Central Area Council’s wards account for more than a quarter of the 1,619 figure, with 455 falls during the period, followed by the North’s 318, 310 in the South, 273 in the North East, 133 in Penistone and 130 in the Dearne.

Each of the six area councils are working to reduce the amount of incidents by commissioning services out of their respective devolved budgets.

A council report said: “The future Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and the local authority’s intention is to have a borough-wide approach to falls prevention.

“We are currently working through the feasibility of primary and secondary falls prevention options to support clinical and social care pathways.”
