AN INVESTIGATION is underway at Barnsley Hospital after an agency nurse was arrested and bailed in connection with an unexplained death of a pensioner.

Police attended the hospital on Sunday, February 8 after reports of an unexplained death of an 86-year-old woman. A source told the Chronicle the hospital is co-operating fully with police and has also launched its own probe into the matter.

It is understood the investigation team is now awaiting results of toxicology tests, which is where samples of blood are sent away for analysis to look for any anomalies.

A spokeswoman for the police said: "Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and a 29-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident on Wednesday, February 11. She has since been released on bail pending further enquires."
