IT’S not every day you see a hospital patient being wheeled around the town centre.

But that’s what drivers and pedestrians saw on Wednesday morning.

The bed push was organised by staff and students from Barnsley College’s health and social department as part of the 70th anniversary celebrations for the NHS, and raised money for the Barnsley Hospital Charity.

It started at the college’s Sci Tech campus at 9.30am, travelling up the hill and onto Huddersfield Road towards the Honeywell site, before a break at Barnsley Hospital.

The bed then rolled down Summer Lane towards the Town End roundabout, back into town via Shambles Street and finished up back at the Sci Tech campus.

Passers-by and motorists were encouraged to donate, and the team raised more than £470.

Including pledges and money raised online, the total amount raised stands at more than £1,200.
