BARNSLEY Hospital has slashed its once spiralling deficit by half, bringing it down to just over £8m.

In January the hospital had been planning to end its financial year with the deficit running at £11.2m but reported it was ‘adverse to plan’ in the region of £5m, meaning it was running at an estimated £16.2m deficit.

However this week the hospital has told the Chronicle this is now down to £8.1m thanks to continuing efficiency savings, and an injection of more than £6m from a national improvement fund.
