Barnsley's midfield maestro Conor Hourihane is facing a race to be fit for the start of the season after injuring his knee in training.

The Irishman, who was the Reds'  top-scorer and Player of the Year for 2014/15, played every game last season but is already a doubt for the opening game of the next campaign at Chesterfield on August 8.

Head coach Lee Johnson told the Chronicle: "The scan showed it is a high grade one, low grade two medial ligament problem. It will be two or three weeks, maybe four. Hopefully we can get him back for the start of the season because he's a big player for us."

Like Hourihane, goalkeeper Adam Davies missed the first pre-season match at Stalybridge on Saturday after aggravated an old groin injury but is expected to fit again for the trip to Guiseley on Tuesday.
