A HOUSE builder which has been blamed by residents for flooding near the site of a new estate appears to be ‘washing its hands of the problem’ according to the secretary of the nearby working men’s club.

Monk Bretton Working Men’s Club owns the row of terraced houses on Club Street and rents them to tenants - some of whom have lived there for 50 years.

Jane Gaskell’s cellar was flooded two weeks ago despite never having flooded before.

“I’m so annoyed, this has really knocked me back has this,” she said.

Bellway Homes is building an estate beyond her garden fence, and she says the removal of grass and trees, and the realignment of the land which tapers towards her home, caused a torrent of water to break through her boundary wall into her garden and cellar - and several neighbours’ cellars too.
