OUTLINE planning permission has been granted for 44 homes on an old steelworks site near Penistone train station following a public inquiry.

Barnsley Council originally rejected plans for properties on a 1.4-hectare site on the former Cammell Laird foundry, off Lairds Way, Springvale because of a potential loss of land which could be used to create jobs.

But the decision has been overturned on appeal, meaning the development can go ahead, subject to detailed plans being approved.

Five letters of objection were sent to the council.
