LABROKES betting office is being forced to move from its current premises in King Street because of regeneration work in the centre of Hoyland, it has emerged.

The firm is applying for planning permission to move to a new site on the old Southgate car park, behind the town hall building, which is being developed as part of the regeneration.

The site has recently been cleared and investigated by archaeologists who found remains of housing from an earlier era on the site, but construction workers have now moved in to start work on the footings of the new buildings.

They will include a large department store to be operated by the Boyes company, which has branches on the Yorkshire east coast.

There will be other retail units and kiosks, with Ladbrokes seeking permission to operate from that location.
