CRIME levels in the Hoyland district have shot up by a third since early summer, the force’s latest statistics show, with a surge in car crime among the most recent issues to emerge in the area.

Figures for September show 229 offences reported to police across an area which includes Hoyland and Elsecar, but stretches to Birdwell, Hemingfield and Pilley - which contrasts with 172 reports made in June.

Offences have been increasing since then, with 215 complaints in July and a slight fall from that figure to 209 in August.
