HOYLAND Leisure Centre is up for a top award after being shortlisted in the UK’s biggest free-to-enter fitness awards.

The centre, which is run by Barnsley Premier Leisure, is a finalist in the local authority/leisure trust of the year and regional gym of the year north categories at the National Fitness Awards which recognises excellence and achievement in gyms throughout the country.

Joni Millthorpe, BPL contracts manager, said: “To receive the shortlisting is real recognition of the effort which has gone into developing the centre and is a testament to both the staff and the community it serves. The continued loyalty shown by our customers has been outstanding. It is a great achievement and we were amazed, especially with how many people have entered the awards and the strong competition we were up against to get this far.

“The staff are all buzzing about it and people are really keen to support us and wish us the best. To get shortlisted in one category would have been fantastic so to make it into two is superb.”

The awards are organised by Script Events and fitness industry magazine Workout. In each category up to seven finalists will go through to the next stage of the judging process, where they will be out to impress by showcasing the work going on in their clubs.

Each finalist will be visited by a member of the awards team who will look around and chat to members and staff before compiling a comprehensive report, which will be passed to an expert judging panel to decide the winners.

The winners will be announced on November 30 in Leicester.

National Fitness Awards’ event director Judith Halkerston said: “All our shortlisted facilities should be really proud of their achievements in being chosen as a finalist as the calibre of entries has been amazing.”
