HOYLAND town centre has been left bereft of cash machines after a series of thefts.
The cash machine at the Co-op on King Street was the only remaining outdoor cash machine in the town centre following the closure of NatWest and the attempted theft of the cash machine at Barclay’s Bank last month.
At around 3am on Wednesday, it was reported that offenders may have used gas canisters to break-into the ATM at the Co-op on King Street, and stole a quantity of cash.
A spokesperson from South Yorkshire Police said: “Some cash was recovered at the scene and enquiries are now ongoing to identify those involved.”
The theft of the cash machine meant residents were queuing inside Heron Food later that day to use the cash machine, which was empty by midmorning.
Suki Walker, 41, of Walkers News said: “The closest cash point for Hoyland residents is now Tesco on Wombwell Road but this will impact on local businesses because as soon as you go there to withdraw cash, you will just go in store to get what you need.
“We have the Post Office where you can get cash back at the till as well as the cash machines inside Heron Foods and One Stop on West Street, but when the stores are closed you have no where to go.”
