A HOYLAND school is celebrating a shift out of ‘special measures’.

Springwood Primary School and the Every Child Matters Academy Trust achieved a ‘good’ grading in all areas in a recent Ofsted inspection.

New headteacher Jen Hunt recognised the work that had previously been done by the whole school team and the ECM Trust to move the school from ‘special measures’ to ‘good’.

“We are thrilled the inspectors graded the school as ‘good’ in all categories,” she said. “The comments reflect the huge journey the school has undertaken since its last inspection. We are grateful for the incredible hard work and achievements of the entire staff and the children and for the continuing support of parents and carers.”

Ofsted found that leaders’ ambition and determination have improved consistency in the quality of teaching and learning and that pupils are making good progress in English and maths.

The school’s assessment system and self-evaluation was found to be enabling them to make the ‘necessary adjustments’ to the curriculum so that pupils’ progress is improving.

Teaching, learning and assessment was graded as good throughout.

Special mention was made of the strong community values within the school and its inclusive nature. “Leaders ensure that the care and welfare of the pupils is paramount,” said the report.

“Pupils behave well, feel safe and are valued as individuals. The school provides strong support for vulnerable pupils and families and as a result of positive relationships, parents and carers value the strong sense of community and belonging the school provides.”

Inspectors were impressed by the support and development provided by the multi academy trust and governors’ ability to challenge and support effectively. Ofsted recognised senior leaders set high expectations for pupils and staff and leaders are ambitious for pupils’ achievement.

Jen Hunt said: “I’m so proud to be headteacher of Hoyland Springwood Primary School and that it has been deservedly recognised as a good school.

“The staff, governors, children and families are a credit to the community we serve.

“The school is rapidly improving due to hard work and dedication of an incredible team and I congratulate the whole school community on this fantastic report. My aim now is to further improve the school as quickly as possible.”
