BARNSLEY FC’s record signing Georgi Hristov says he would love to play for the club again. Hristov, over in England for the international match with Macedonia at Old Trafford last Saturday, returned to Barnsley on Friday night and treated his godson Nenad to a day he will not forget. Nenad’s father George Smiljanic, owner of the Play-Off Cafe in the town centre, became friends with Hristov during the latter’s three-year spell at Oakwell. George said: “When Georgi arrived we went to visit his old neighbours and friends from when he lived here before. “We also went round the town and he was getting stopped and asked for pictures all the time. “He would love to play for Barnsley again. He is a free agent after leaving his club in Greece and he is still fit because he did his normal pre-season with his old club.” Nenad, who plays for Manchester United Academy under 12s and is highly-rated by Sir Alex Ferguson, took Georgi with him to watch him train at Manchester’s Carrington training ground on Saturday morning. And after being impressed with his godson’s skills, Georgi took Nenad and George to the Macedonia team hotel to meet the rest of the players. They spoke with the Macedonian captain, Sedloski, who Hristov knew when he played for Barnsley and Sedloski represented South Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield Wednesday. The trio also got the chance to see the international from VIP seats – and meet up again with the Macedonia team after the match. Proud dad George said: “Nenad loved the whole day. Georgi was really impressed with Nenad’s training session in the morning and then Nenad was thrilled to meet the Macedonia players. “He was very sensible during the game. He wanted England to win deep down but because he was sat with the Macedonia lot, he was cheering for them as well! “It was a day that Nenad won’t forget in a hurry, I am sure of that.”

We have been at the heart of our community, every week, since 1858. The town and its people have changed dramatically since then but the Chronicle has been a constant.
It’s our belief that news should be available to everyone regardless of their circumstance. But we need a little helping hand to do so.
Production Editor, Ashley Ball, said: "In an ever changing media world, it’s important that news is reported correctly and without any hidden agenda.
Your support allows us to keep holding decision-makers to account and report on everything that happens in the town, good or bad, fairly."
