NEW shops and upstairs flats could be created from the former HSBC bank building in St Mary's Road, Penistone, that has been standing empty since the branch closed last year.

The building is Listed and is also in a conservation area, meaning that special planning permissions are needed before alterations can be made to the structure.

But if Barnsley Council agrees, it will mean shops created at the ground floor level, with five flats above.

Application details show there would be changes to the windows, with two to be lowered to floor level.

However, planners have been told in documents submitted with the application: "This will have minimal impact and preserve the character of the building."
