Barnsley lost 2-1 at Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town on Saturday to remain rooted to the bottom of the Championship table.

The hosts led 1-0 at the break then doubled their lead early in the second half before Jacob Brown pulled one back. The Reds are now winless in 13 games which is their longest run since 1971 while they are four points adrift of safety.

Caretaker Adam Murray kept the same team that drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday. Barnsley began well, with a series of early attacks and corners, and Dimitri Cavare should have played through Cameron McGeehan on goal but chose to have a shot which was blocked wide. Cauley Woodrow then deflected a McGeehan shot and it trickled well wide.

Barnsley then spent the second half of the first half defending a lot, while the hosts thought they should have been given two penalties. The first was a trip by Bambo Diaby on Fraizer Campbell which was just outside the box but, later, Kenny Dougall appeared to miss the ball and bring down Elias Kachunga only for referee James Linington to wave away the appeals.

The hosts eventually took the lead in the 29th minute from a clever free-kick routine which saw Danny Simpson play in Karlan Grant whose low cross from the right of the box was tapped in at the back post by centre-back Christopher Schindler.

The visitors should have levelled within three minutes when Woodrow’s shot hit Conor Chaplin and dropped perfectly to McGeehan but, somehow, he shinned the ball over the bar from six yards out.

Huddersfield started the second half well and doubled their lead seven minutes after the break. Lewis O’Brien skipped around Mads Andersen before passing to Grant who got away from Diaby before curling into the top right corner from 15 yards out.

Barnsley again had chances to reply instantly with Woodrow volleying wide from a Brown cross then Diaby heading well over five yards out from a Mowatt corner.  The hosts should have had a third when O’Brien rushed down the left wing and pulled the ball back for Grant whose shot was well saved by Collins, getting down to his left, but Kachunga blazed the rebound over from eight yards out. Kachunga then dragged a shot just wide from the edge of the box.

Barnsley pulled one back in the 79th minute when Mowatt’s right-wing corner was only half-cleared and Andersen touched the ball to Brown who curled into the top left corner from ten yards out on the right of the box. It was his first goal of the season and first in the Championship.  Huddersfield came close to a 3-1 lead when substitute Adam Diakhaby volleyed over from eight yards out after good work by Grant on the left wing. Andersen could have levelled when he met a left-wing Mowatt free-kick but sent the header well wide.

Collins then almost gifted the hosts a goal when he ran well out of his box and headed weakly to O’Brien whose 40-yard effort was well off target of the open goal.

Barnsley are currently winless in 12 league games following the opening day success over Fulham. That is their longest such run since 1971 when John McSeveney’s side also won their opening game but then did not secure victory again for 13 matches.
  • 14:14pm

The Reds are bottom on goal difference while they are three points from safety ahead of tomorrow’s trip to third-bottom Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town.
  • 14:15pm
Caretaker Adam Murray said: “I honestly believe we have enough to stay up – the players have enough ability and mental strength, but the most important thing is to stay consistent. We are focusing on a mini-league and we want to get to the top of that. I have told the players the number of games we need to win, based on the history of the Championship, and we’ll focus on that. It’s a marathon of a season. We need to win games, of course, but we need to not lose our focus and become erratic.”
  • 14:16pm

The Reds are yet to win away from home this season but picked up a 2-2 draw at leaders West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday, having been 2-0 up. They have the worst defensive record in the division with 25 goals conceded.
  • 14:19pm

Murray, who has overseen the draws with Swansea and West Brom, said: “Any win would be gratefully received. What the players are seeing is a little reward for the work they are putting in but a win would be tenfold of that. We could make moves in the league as well which is another tick in the box. If we get a positive result it makes it a really, really good week.”
  • 14:21pm
Barnsley are expected to take a large travelling contingent to the John Smith’s Stadium. Murray said: “I think it will be a fantastic atmosphere and a big occasion. Our fans showed on Tuesday what an incredible atmosphere they create. They will bring that driving force to Huddersfield and it’s important that the players do the same thing. Tuesday night was the highest numbers we have seen in the last two seasons in terms of physical output so the boys are really putting a shift in and we will need that on Saturday.”
  • 14:27pm

After collecting just two points from their first nine league games this season, Town have picked up nine from their most recent five matches, in which they are unbeaten, and are third-bottom in the table, two points and two places above the Reds.
  • 14:27pm

They were relegated from the Premier League last season as they finished bottom, 20 points adrift, having won just one of their last 25 matches which brought 21 losses.
  • 14:33pm
The poor form continued into this season and, after collecting just a point from the first three matches, manager Jan Siewert was sacked. The German – who had recruited Barnsley’s assistant coach Andreas Winkler in January before he left in the summer – had won just one of his 19 matches and lost 15.
  • 14:33pm

Caretaker Mark Hudson lost all three of his games in charge before the Terriers appointed former PE teacher Danny Cowley, who had taken Lincoln City up two divisions.
  • 14:33pm

Cowley lost his first two games but a 1-1 draw with Millwall ended a six-match run of defeats before they won a bottom-two clash at Stoke City – their first win since February – and triumphed 3-0 at home to Hull City. That took them out of the relegation zone for the international break.
  • 14:37pm

Huddersfield drew 2-2 at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday then 0-0 at home to fellow strugglers Middlesbrough on Wednesday.
  • 14:37pm

Murray said: “I went to the game on Wednesday and they are a typical Danny Cowley team – hard-working and organised. They are on a good run with momentum. I have watched every team in this league five or six times and they all have strengths and weaknesses.
  • 14:41pm

“We know how we will go about the game. It will be a tough challenge but we’ll focus on ourselves. Our frame of mind is all about us at the moment. There will be a pressure from the fans because it’s a local derby. It will be about who comes through the strongest mentally.”
  • 14:44pm
Cauley Woodrow, who scored twice in the 2-2 draw at West Brom on Tuesday, said: “We played two of the better teams in the league and got points so now we have to play the teams who aren’t at the top of the table like Huddersfield and, if we perform like we have been, then I am sure we will get the win we are looking for. It’s a local derby and we will go there for a win. We’re not not confident, we have a lot of belief and feel positive.”
  • 14:44pm
Defender Toby Sibbick added: “They are in and around us. We want to go to win and, if we play the way we have, chances will come our way and I am sure our strikers will put them in. It’s a long season, but, the sooner we get three points, the better.”
  • 14:46pm

Murray has known the Cowley brothers since their Concord Rangers team played his Mansfield Town side in the FA Cup in 2014. He said: “Danny asked for my scouting reports on them after the game and we have kept in touch ever since.”
  • 14:46pm

The Reds have won just one of their last eight league meetings with their West Yorkshire neighbours, a 2-1 home success under David Flitcroft in 2013 thanks to goals by Chris O’Grady and Marcus Pedersen.
  • 14:49pm

Of their 31 league trips to Huddersfield, Barnsley have won just five with the last being a 2-0 success in September 2004 in which Barry Conlon and an own goal put the visitors in charge after 20 minutes.
  • 14:54pm

They also won at the John Smith’s Stadium in the 2006 League One play-off semi-final, with a 3-1 success overturning a 1-0 first leg deficit.
  • 14:54pm

Their three visits since then brought a 2-2 draw on the final day of the 2012/13 season – which kept both sides in the Championship after they stopped playing for the final minutes – as well as defeats by scores of 5-0 and 2-1.
  • 14:54pm

The last meeting was a 1-1 draw at Oakwell in February 2017 with Marley Watkins equalising against the Premier League-bound Terriers.
  • 14:55pm
Murray has now been caretaker for almost three weeks, while the board are conducting interviews with potential new head coaches. Murray told the Chronicle: “I haven’t got it in my head that I want the job but I haven’t got it in my head that I don’t want to be in this seat much longer. I could be selfish and make it all about me but it’s about the bigger picture and making sure that there is a really good environment for whoever gets to sit in the hotseat for the rest of the season. We still have a hell of a lot of work to do to get the team where I think it can be. But I am fairly confident that, if and when a new manager comes in, myself and the staff can say: ‘here’s a fantastic product, take it forward’.”
  • 14:55pm

The teams are walking out onto the pitch. Barnsley are in red shirts and shorts with Huddersfield in blue and white stripes.
  • 14:59pm

This is Huddersfield's remembrance game so there will be a minute's silence
  • 15:03pm

Barnsley co-owner Paul Conway stood with the coaching staff during the minute's silence. The game is about to kick off now

  • 15:07pm

4 A cross field pass finds Chaplin again on the left and he wins another corner
  • 15:07pm

  • 15:09pm

  • 15:10pm

There's a pause in play here with a home player down injured
  • 15:11pm

9 Lewis O'Brien is up and on his feet. Mowatt takes the corner short to Woodrow, gets it back but his cross is far too deep and cleared
  • 15:15pm

Barnsley have had the better of the first ten minutes, spending plenty of time in the hosts' half and winning three corners. They have just failed to find the crucial final pass when in a couple of promising positions
  • 15:17pm

Barnsley look very alert and busy today, as they have done during Murray's caretakership. Jacob Brown in particular has flown into a couple of well-timed challenges

20 McGeehan's shot is diverted by Woodrow in the box but it trickles a few feet wide

22 Huddersfield are furious that they have not been awarded a penalty. Kenny Dougall blocks a cross then appears to trip Fraizer Campbell without getting the ball. But the referee does not give it
  • 15:29pm

The home crowd has been whipped up after that penalty appeal and it's a good atmosphere in here. The Terriers are spending more time in their visitors' half now than they were in the opening 20 minutes
  • 15:32pm

28 Cauley Woodrow shoots from just inside the box on the left but hits it well over

  • 15:35pm

32 Cameron McGeehan looks to have missed a massive chance for a leveller when he is put clean through after Woodrow's pass hits Mowatt, but he shins horribly over six yards out.
  • 15:35pm

That goal is a big blow for the Reds, who had started the game so well then faded
  • 15:36pm

    YELLOW CARD

  • 15:39pm

Barnsley are struggling at the moment, they have defended almost constantly in the last ten minutes. The away end is quite quiet
  • 15:43pm

Five minutes left in the first half. The Reds will be happy to hear the whistle at the moment as, after a promising first 20 minutes, they have been pushed back in their own half
  • 15:47pm

Overall, Barnsley have had probably more chances and better opportunities than their hosts - with McGeehan missing the really clear one. But Huddersfield will say they should have had a penalty before they scored and they have been well on top for the last 25 minutes
  • 15:48pm

    Three minutes added
  • 15:48pm

    GOAL!
Karlan Grant with an excellent strike
  • 16:18pm

  • 16:20pm

56 Woodrow volleys wide a cross by Jacob Brown. Tough chance as at an awkward height and it came to him quickly

  • 16:28pm

  • 16:34pm

Cavare is currently down getting treatment after colliding with a home player
  • 16:37pm

Barnsley look weary now. Has the intensity with which they played in the previous games caught up with them?
  • 16:39pm

Luke Thomas has come on for Cavare
  • 16:40pm

76 Another decent chance for Kachunga as the ball is pulled back to him from the right to the edge of the box where he drags a shot just wide of the bottom left corner
  • 16:42pm

  • 16:49pm

    YELLOW CARD
Christopher Schindler booked for fouling Wilks on the left wing
  • 16:50pm

86 Alex Mowatt's left-wing free-kick is headed by Mads Andersen and it drifts a couple of metres wide
  • 16:54pm

    Six added minutes
  • 16:54pm

An equaliser here would feel like a big comeback and, despite not being a win, would add more momentum to what Adam Murray has built up in the last few weeks
  • 16:57pm

We're halfway through the six added minutes now,. Barnsley haven't threatened in injury time. Can they create one more chance?
