‘HUMAN error’ was to blame for the horrific rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers which left two Barnsley teenagers critically injured.

The Staffordshire theme park has completed its investigation into the incident on The Smiler rollercoaster on June 2, which resulted in life-changing injuries for Leah Washington, 18, who lost her left leg, and 19-year-old boyfriend Joe Pugh who sustained two shattered kneecaps and hand injuries.

A statment released this week by the theme park’s owners - Merlin Entertainments - said the ride will reopen next year and a series of new safety measures will be put in place.

The investigation concluded the horror smash was the result of ‘human error’ culminating in the manual override of the ride safety control system without appropriate protocols being followed. It also identified areas where protocols and the training of employees should be improved. There were found to be no technical or mechanical problems with the ride itself.
