HUW Davies is almost completely blind and uses hearing aids - but that didn't stop him venturing into a swimming pool for the first time as part of his fitness regime.

Unable to see or hear, Huw, 53, of Queen's Way, Hoyland, managed to complete a few strokes with the help of instructors.

"It was quite daunting not being able to see or hear anything. And it was very confusing because the pool at the Metrodome is not rectangular but I will get used to it in the end. I did relax and start to enjoy it in the end."

Huw started to lose his eyesight in his mid-30s due to a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa.

Huw also attends the gym twice a week with his guide dog Owen and is helped around by a member of staff.
