AN iconic Wombwell business has closed its doors after trading in the area for more than 40 years.

Carpet Centre Wombwell, also known as Trevor's Carpets on Barnsley Road, shut up shop officially on Saturday and is selling its remaining stock until tomorrow.

Owner Trevor Longden, 65, said: "We are in negotiations at the moment, the staff may carry on under their own name or might have another principal."

Trevor took over the Carpet Centre in 1986, and the business moved from the High Street to Barnsley Road ten years ago.

The store was well known for its advertising campaigns, which included multi-coloured double decker buses and invitations to 'come and talk to Trevor'.
