A SUM of £156,300 from the sale of land where a miners' welfare hall once stood is being used to improve Elsecar Park.
Hoyland Nether public hall once stood at the corner of King Street and Millhouses Street but had to be demolished after it was damaged in a fire in the early 1990s.
The hall - well used during the miners' strike - was held in charitable trust by Barnsley Council and the proceeds of any sale of the land could only be used for "specific charitable objectives."
The land where the hall stood was sold some years ago and now it has been agreed that the proceeds will be used for improvements to Elsecar Park.
Details of the improvements are yet to be released but Hoyland Milton Coun Robin Franklin said it was likely the cash would be used to improve car parking, the park cafe and the toilets.
