Sue Gilroy is hoping to take a major step towards the 2016 Rio Paralympics when she competes in the European Championships in Denmark next week.

The 42-year-old from Dodworth is hoping to better the bronze she won in the last Europeans, in which she has taken gold before.

"If I play to my best then I have as good a chance as anybody at the Europeans," said Gilroy, who is a teacher at Shawlands Primary School.

"It would be great to win gold there but my ultimate aim is to get a Paralympic medal. "I have got medals at the Worlds, Europeans and Commonwealths but never the Paralympics."

To qualify for Rio, Sue will have to pick up 250 'credits' from ranking tournaments, and also be in the top ten in the world by the end of the year and get selected for the Great Britain team.

She said: "I have had a really good year. "I am ranked fourth in the world in my class and second in Europe.  I should get enough credits for Rio if I do well in the Europeans then another tournament in China in November. "Because I work full-time, I don't get to as many competitions as my rivals so I have to make each event count."
