A CUDWORTH street was cordoned off by police this week after a man sustained serious head injuries in an alleged attack.

The 57-year-old victim, who remains in hospital, is in a critical condition but police say his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The incident, which took place on Crown Avenue on Monday at around 9.15pm, resulted in police issuing an appeal for information.

Neighbours told the Chronicle emergency services were called after an altercation spilled out onto the street, where the victim was knocked unconscious after being struck.

One said: “I heard a lot of shouting but just thought it was a normal argument, but I looked outside and a man was laying on the floor.

“It’s a shocking thing to have happened as there are many kids who live on Crown Avenue and it’s not nice for them to see police and scenes of crime officers near where they live.

“I didn’t know the man who was injured but we all hope he recovers.”

Police confirmed an investigation has been started.

A spokesman said: “Emergency services were called to Crown Avenue at around 9.15pm on Monday evening following reports that the man had been injured during an altercation in the street.

“The man sustained serious injuries to his head after reportedly being struck with an object. He currently remains in hospital in a critical condition, although his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

“A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm in connection to the incident. He currently remains in police custody.”
